My dad was a member of the United Steelworkers. He worked at Bridgeport Brass. As a kid growing up I knew my dad worked hard and he provided for our family. We lived in a good neighborhood with quality schools and an amazing community of working class families around us. I was also fortunate to have a stay at home mom.
This was possible because he wasn’t just an employee at Bridgeport Brass, he was a Union member at Bridgeport Brass – A Steelworker. Having that strong Union behind him is what made it possible to have the wages and benefits needed to raise our family in dignity.
The importance of a strong middle class in our country became clear to me when I entered the workforce myself. Working and living in dignity is what most people strive for in life. I was a member of the United Steelworkers Union for forty-eight years. I have fought for the working men and women of Central Indiana for over thirty years as a Union Leader.
Watching the destruction of the middle class of this country is extremely hard. Seeing factories close and the moving of jobs to countries where they are paid slave wages, all because of corporate greed is unacceptable.
Paying a living wage and providing good benefits to their employees are things that companies should do in order to grow our economy and rebuild our struggling middle class. Unfortunately we are not seeing this, what we are seeing is, people struggling to make it from one paycheck to another. Worried about how they are going to survive. Needing help but being denied.
That is why I am running for Wayne Township Trustee. There aren’t as many good paying union jobs out there as there once was but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on making sure that everyone lives in dignity. An injury to one is an injury to all.
